Calligraphy
Calligraphy (Husn-i hat in Turkish, meaning beautiful writing) was born as a Calligraphic art with Arabic letters. Calligraphy was aplied and elabarated on the Quran, manuscripts, epigraphs, gravestones, wood and metal works, fabrics, tiles and decorations. Begining with Islam, calligraphy extends from Turkistan to Andalusia and became a miraculous invention and a unique art in the hands of Turks. Turkish calligraphers established an unmatched and superior ecole in the art of calligraphy. The following phrase is very expressive in showing the unquestioned supremacy of our calligraphers: "The Quran descended in Mecca, read in Egypt, written in Istanbul. The Ottoman calligraphic Art marked an epoch with Sheikh Hamdullah, a calligrapger during the reign of Caesar Mehmed II The Conqueror.
